Sustainability and community empowerment through Red Lady Papaya Farming for Soap Production in General Santos, Philippines by Politeknik Piksi Ganesha

December 1st, 2024 – General Santos, Philippines

Politeknik Piksi Ganesha in General Santos, Philippines, has launched an exciting community service project that blends agriculture with local industry, cultivating Red Lady Papaya to produce soap. The fruit contains papain, an enzyme that exfoliates dead skin cells, and vitamins A, C, and E, which nourish and hydrate the skin.

In this community service project, the papaya’s natural properties are harnessed to produce organic soap, making it a sustainable raw material for a local soap production business. This initiative presents an innovative way to create a marketable product while utilizing a local agricultural resource that would otherwise go to waste. This activity in line with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

By producing soap from papayas, the project promotes sustainable production practices. The use of natural ingredients like papaya aligns with the movement toward eco-friendly and chemical-free products. The project also minimizes waste by utilizing papayas that may otherwise go unsold, turning what could be a food waste issue into an opportunity for sustainable business.
